Weekly Market Review

Good afternoon,

“Mike, did you hear? Did you hear?”

Hear what?

“POTUS 45 has COVID 19!”

Yes, I did hear that.

“You see? It’s real, put on your mask!”

We asked last week if it could get any crazier, and sure enough it did. If the man who lives in the most protected bubble in the world can get it, then anyone can get it. They regularly screen anyone and everyone who comes within any proximity of the POTUS and take extraordinary precautions and they couldn’t prevent he or FLOTUS from becoming infected. A virus has gotta virus. The WMR never claimed that the virus wasn’t real or wasn’t a threat, especially to certain groups of individuals, we just expressed our skepticism that closing businesses and ordering people to wear a mask would produce the intended results.

Here is a smart guy talking about the current craziness, https://www.ftportfolios.com/Commentary/EconomicResearch/2020/10/2/what-a-year-what-a-week

This is crazy, the FBI foiled a kidnapping plot against Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer.

https://www.cnbc.com/2020/10/08/michigan-gov-gretchen-whitmer-kidnap-plot-busted-by-fbi.html

Wow. I disagree with her on pretty much everything, but it never occurred to me that she should be kidnapped. Better to beat her in the next election.

Uncomfortable discussions abound these days and not only in politics, so let’s add one more subject, estate planning. See attached for a booklet that will help you introduce some estate planning topics with your family. Similar to the Family Love Letter, which I’ve referenced here before, this piece is produced by one of Lincoln’s investment company partners. It is not a substitute for the appropriate legal documents, wills, trusts, POAs and such, but it does cover a lot of ground that even those documents neglect. Some of the topics will be uncomfortable, mortality has that effect on people, but they are necessary and important. Have fun with it.

Speaking of mortality, R.I.P. Eddie Van Halen. Widely regarded as one of the greatest rock and roll guitarists who ever lived and also widely regarded as a genuinely good guy, he passed this week at only 65 years old.

Here is one of his famous solos, “Eruption.”  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_lwocmL9dQ

Holiday crowds at the mall will be smaller this year, https://www.cnbc.com/2020/10/06/the-number-of-holiday-shoppers-at-stores-to-drop-25percent-says-shoppertrak.html

Well duh.

We’ve all seen  reports of the best places to retire or best places to live. Best cities or best countries or best whatever. This article takes it one step further. Scientists say that planet Earth is not the best place to live…

https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/gadgets-and-tech/earth-alien-life-nasa-planets-worlds-b811661.html

Huh?

Researchers have identified 24 “superhabitable” planets, saying that they offer conditions more suitable for life than here on Earth.

Huh?

However, the closest of them are 100 light years away, which could make it difficult to find a moving company willing to make the trip.

Have you ever wondered what would happen if you fired a baseball out of an air cannon at faster than the speed of sound?  Me too!  Wonder no further, watch this cool video,

Yes, my kids think I’m a nerd for enjoying stuff like this.

Nothing new to report in personal news this week, though my oldest daughter does tell some interesting stories about customers at the boutique clothing/shoe store where she works.

“Some of our customers are weird.”

What do you mean?

“They’re just weird. They act weird. They ask weird questions. They’re just weird.”

Yep, any cross section of people is going to have a certain percentage of weirdness. Get used to it.

This week’s chuckle is courtesy of comedian and master impressionist, Frank Caliendo, safe for work.

Have a great week and stay healthy.
