Weekly Market Review

Weekly Market Review

Good afternoon,

I’ll start this week with a bit of non-business. The Rocket Mortgage Classic PGA golf tournament will be held next week at my home course, The Detroit Golf Club.  https://www.pgatour.com/tournaments/rocket-mortgage-classic.html

I will of course be working again as a walking scorer volunteer so I will of course report back after July 4th with my musings on this year’s event.

On to a little business. Let’s take a moment and do, as our name implies, a weekly market review. This particular week everything seems to be looking good. The stock markets are up, the real estate markets seem to be flying, crypto is swinging wildly and masks are no longer required so all is well with the world. Right?  https://www.cnbc.com/2021/06/22/stock-market-futures-open-to-close-news.html

Will we continue on the same path?  Probably yes. But maybe no. Anyone who tells you they know the future for sure is lying. So what should a prudent investor do now? First of all, stay invested, because market timing is futile. Next, stay diversified among various asset classes, various sectors, various industries and so forth. And if you are still worried about a crash or recession or hyperinflation or some other large event, consider some strategies to limit your downside. There are several methods which I can’t illustrate here specifically because that would be blanket investment advice, which I’m not allowed to dispense to a large audience. Suffice it to say that there are some investments that employ various mechanisms that can protect gains and/or mitigate losses. So if you’re nervous, call me for specifics.

A quick reminder that even though my message is called the Weekly Market Review, I don’t actually review the market each week. There are enough news sites and blogs doing that, and frankly it isn’t necessary. Nor is it conducive to a successful investment strategy. Reviewing markets a few times per year is more than enough. Reviewing your particular circumstances, especially as your story changes and evolves is much more important and should be done when and as necessary.

In automobile news, and I may be the only one who cares about this, Ford is introducing a new truck, the Maverick.

It looks like this.

2022 Ford Maverick Arrives as a Hybrid Compact Pickup

I’m not currently in the market for a vehicle but this caught my attention because my first car ever was a Ford Maverick.  The Maverick back in the day wasn’t a truck and wasn’t nearly as cool as this. I inherited my 1974 Maverick from my great aunt, my grandmother’s sister, who decided she no longer required a car. A 4 door sedan in a horrible green color, it was probably 8 years old when I received it, only had about 30k miles, no A/C and no FM radio and was one of the ugliest cars Detroit ever produced. But I was 16 y/o and it was MINE so it was awesome. I spent $189 and had it painted black and drove it for 2 or 3 years. Really made me appreciate the first car I bought with my own money.  Here was my Maverick. No wonder I didn’t get many dates in high school….

From that car to the newest Tesla Model S Plaid edition. 0-60 mph in just 2 seconds. That’s motorcycle fast. It’s a 4000 lb, 1000 horsepower, all electric beast. And the MSRP is only $130,000.

Crazy.

The History Channel has an interesting series, if you’re a car person, “The Cars That Built the World.” https://www.history.com/shows/the-cars-that-built-the-world

This is crazy too, and speaking of interesting shows, I watched a documentary a few nights ago by a man who posed as an Indian Guru to see if he could acquire followers. The backstory is that his Indian grandmother took him around to various priests and shamans or whatever as a boy and he was not impressed. So later he grows out his hair and beard, makes up some chants and mantras and poses and proceeds to see if he can develop a following.  It starts out as sort of a joke, but becomes much more. He really does impact people’s lives. And learns something valuable about himself along the way. No spoiler alerts here, but I found it an interesting study in people. The followers he cultivates along the process are in search of something, and they find it in the fictional Kumare. And Kumare even repeatedly tells them that he’s not what they think he is. Here is the official movie page, https://kumaremovie.com/ but it can also be found for free in various other places. Perhaps what you seek is already in you.

If you’re wondering how I found this, it’s because I subscribe to Tim Ferriss’ weekly email, 5 Bullet Friday. In which he introduces readers to whatever 5 items happen to have his attention that week.

https://go.tim.blog/5-bullet-friday-1/

Tim’s attention span, like mine, is quite broad so I never know what he might suggest.

This week’s chuckle is Mike’s New Car, a Pixar short film, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfC_GuHiP68

Safe for everyone.

Have a great week and stay healthy.
