Weekly Market Review

Good afternoon,

Happy New Year!

I’ve always considered New Year’s Eve a kind of arbitrary holiday.  I mean, couldn’t we count down backwards from ten at any time on any day and then drink a toast of our favorite beverage to the time or days in front of us?  Couldn’t 3:45pm on a Thursday give you a countdown to Thursday evening?  Just like using a calendar year to measure stock price movement or portfolio performance or annual sales at a company or some other bit of data is kind of arbitrary too.  Then again, I guess we have to give things some context and a calendar year is a widely accepted and readily available method of doing that.

Judge Smails:
Ty, what did you shoot today?

Ty Webb:
Oh, Judge, I don't keep score.

Judge Smails:
Then how do you measure yourself with other golfers?

Ty Webb:
By height.

Here is a quick summary of 2020:

Spalding Smails:
I want a hamburger... no, a cheeseburger. I want a hot dog. I want a milkshake...

Judge Smails:
You'll get nothing, and like it!

Usually in my year end WMR, I make some mention of how the most popular new year resolutions always have something to do with better finances and/or better health. And then I state some statistic about how resolutions last about as long as a snowman in San Diego.  So this year end, I won’t mention any of that. I won’t recap any of 2020 and I won’t predict anything for 2021.

Here is one of my favorite authors/podcasters, Tim Ferriss, with some advice on how to conduct a “past year review.”

This exercise is so simple and straightforward that it has to work.

And in case you’ve identified some past things that you don’t want to continue, here is a quick primer on how to break bad habits

While we’re at it, how about adding healthy eating as a new good habit so we can be healthier in the first place. Here is Dr. Mark Hyman from the Cleveland Clinic telling the truth.

We’ll end this week’s brief message with some light reading, here is the COVID-19 relief bill, in its entirety. 5,600 pages of potential relief, and lots of pork.

Is it any wonder why most of us have such a low opinion of politicians?

No interesting kid news this week. All they’ve really been doing is staying up too late, sleeping in too long and probably eating too much. Similar to what most of us have been doing since March.

This week’s chuckle is the light reading scene from the movie “Airplane.”

Mike, surely you can’t be serious??

Have a great week, Happy New Year, and stay healthy.
