Weekly Market Review

Weekly Market Review

Good afternoon,

You’re in luck! You get another WMR this week because I was late getting last week’s message out.  I was late composing it and it bounced around compliance longer than normal which is why last week’s message came out early this week. So continue reading for this week’s issue.

In COVID19 news, do we really need more COVID19 news?  Several of the emails I get each week seem intent on scaring me by stating covid data. This many people infected in YOUR county, this many deaths in YOUR city, etc. Not to mention the national news, which thrives on making people scared and keeping them that way. One of the local emails included info on a new initiative from our Governor here in MI about  how to deal with kids home from school and how to get them ready to go back. Seriously Governor Whitmer? YOU’RE the reason they’re not in school and now you’re telling me what I should do about it?? Thanks, but we can figure it out for ourselves. “Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it everywhere, diagnosing it incorrectly and applying the wrong remedies.” – Ernest Benn.

How about this headline, “Can mosquitos carry COVID?” https://www.theladders.com/career-advice/can-mosquitoes-carry-covid-19-heres-what-the-experts-say?ltm=sbOrobzA6%2BfdP3cImrx7O6BzZi%2Bpj8sCVYtgWn%2BrU8E%3D&subscriber_type=member&utm_swu=6280&utm_term=dnl-5-20-20-lifelock&utm_medium=email&utm_content=dnl-5-20-20-lifelock&utm_campaign=daily-newsletter&utm_source=member

That’s enough already. Don’t want to hear it anymore. If I’ve got to worry about covid and mosquitos, I’m done worrying about it at all. Just my opinion.

Or this headline, “Unemployment fraud at all time high due to COVID.” https://www.theladders.com/career-advice/unemployment-insurance-fraud-is-at-an-all-time-high-amid-covid-19-crisis?ltm=sbOrobzA6%2BfdP3cImrx7O6BzZi%2Bpj8sCVYtgWn%2BrU8E%3D&subscriber_type=member&utm_swu=6280&utm_term=dnl-5-20-20-lifelock&utm_medium=email&utm_content=dnl-5-20-20-lifelock&utm_campaign=daily-newsletter&utm_source=member

Well duh. Who didn’t know this would happen. Business owners generally get notice when someone applies for unemployment from their place. We heard a story, strictly anecdotal, that one business owner got notice from 30 people claiming unemployment whom had never worked for him. Ever. Too bad, but not surprising.

So instead of being scared of getting sick, let’s have a short discussion about how to strengthen your immune system in advance of being exposed to something. The WMR’s #2 interest, the first is finance, is health, physical fitness and longevity. We’ve even devoted a portion of our website to it, http://www.weeklymarketreview.com/Physical-Fitness.7.htm

Here is a Joe Rogan podcast with Dr. Rhonda Patrick, who discusses some ways to enhance your immune system. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_ZJ8YDOX6g

She talks a lot about vitamin C and vitamin D which seem to be big factors in warding off disease. This WebMD article says that vitamin D might be important to resisting covid. https://www.webmd.com/lung/news/20200518/more-vitamin-d-lower-risk-of-severe-covid-19

And here are two more docs who discuss that same topic, https://carnivoremd.com/is-a-vaccine-truly-the-answer-to-the-coronavirus-pandemic-with-dr-ben-lynch/

I’m not a doctor and I don’t play one on the internet, so please check with your health care person before starting a supplement program. But it might be something to consider. I’ve been taking supplements for decades because I simply cannot get the nutrients I need from diet alone. Not sure if it actually works, and it didn’t prevent 2 torn rotator cuffs, but it makes me feel like it does.

Exercise and sleep are also very important for immune system support. This guy has some great info about that, https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/article/sleep-articles/increase-deep-sleep/

The single most important factor in being healthy as you age is how you handle stress. You must have some healthy mechanisms for dealing with stress. Without those, you’ll be unhealthy. Here’s some help with that, https://tim.blog/2017/08/02/michael-gervais/

Now that I’ve helped prepare your body to fight off viruses and such, let’s relate that to preparing your investments from outside attack. See what I did there? Nice segue if I do say so myself. I can’t predict global pandemics or 20% national unemployment or oil price moves, but I can predict, with 100% certainty, that markets will not move in a positive direction at all times. So when I build strategies, I always plan for and include investments that zig when others zag. I include strategies, when appropriate, that can protect investments from big swings. I include, when appropriate, strategies that can guarantee income regardless of market activity. If your investment person doesn’t do that, call me for help.

Speaking of income, I’ve had a couple of clients who’ve been offered buyouts during this uncertain time. After a conversation, financial and non financial, we decided in a couple of cases that it was a good thing to do. We talked about required income, the sources of that income, assets available to draw from and other financial questions.  Then we had a long talk about what retirement might look like. What are you going to do? How will you stay busy? Etc. Then we walked through the various required paperwork, IRA apps, distribution forms and so forth.

Wow Mike, thanks for that help!

No problem.

How much do I owe you?

For what?

For helping me with all that stuff.

No charge. It’s what I do for clients and friends of clients.

Thanks!

My pleasure.
